How Humility Affects Confidence

We seldom think of humility in terms of confidence. It is, however, one of the most powerful qualities any human being can possess. Humility can affect our confidence because it allows those who possess it, the freedom to bypass many of the superficial constraints often placed on us by others in society.

That makes humility worthy of diligent pursuit because it fosters a level and type of internal freedom that cannot be found in many other human qualities.

One of the ways we build our confidence is by making decisions that produce the outcomes we desire, and that help us feel good about our choices and behaviors, especially those that concern others. The greater our internal freedom, the greater is our ability to choose and make choices we consider to be best and most advantageous not only for us, but also for others. Humility allows us to let others shine without the feeling we have incurred a loss. We no longer always have to be in charge or in the limelight. We are free to share opportunities with others. Anytime we build others, we build ourselves.

Unfortunately, we seldom picture humility as something to be desired because it is often presented as a weakness. But don’t be deceived. Humility is a liberating force that strengthens us internally and has the power to catapult our confidence to new heights.
